NEW YORK DESIGN WEEK 2024

Cybele Dance Performance

In May 2024, during NYxDesign Week, Aurélie Hug created a performance located in a Manhattan loft. It featured a beautifully rounded armchair, meticulously designed by Grade NY and Jouffre, and upholstered by the skilled artisans at Ateliers Jouffre.

Surrounding the chair were five large panels crafted from finely woven wool and silk by Rogers & Goffigon, delicately ajouré and embroidered with raffia, which gracefully outlined the silhouette of a dancer in motion against a backdrop of nature.

This performance, interpreted by dancer Dasol Kim to an original piece played live by composer  Morgan Tyler Beatrice showcased the artistry of the rounded chair. The intricate raffia embroidery echoing the chair’s gentle curves while incorporating motifs of dancing figures and olive branches – a poetic reminiscence of both dance and nature. Serving as an ode to women and the vitality they bring to the world, the performance also celebrated the women who rise after falling, as well as those who dare infuse life into existence. The intention was to evoke surprise and stir emotion, forging a connection between the human experience and the art of Design.

NEW YORK DESIGN WEEK 2024

Oui! Design Festival 2024

As part of the Oui! Design Festival 2024, we collaborated with luxury textile company Rogers & Goffigon to create a series of stunning embroidered large panels for their New York D&D showroom. Using Rogers & Goffigon’s premium wool and linen fabrics, we crafted large-scale panels inspired by the gardens of Pompeii and its iconic frescos.

The collection features intricate scenes, such as a towering fig tree appliquéd on burlap and highlighted with dyed raffia, alongside tone-on-tone embroidered trees, birds, and flowers. Each design brought to life the subtle textures and rich heritage of these materials, paying homage to the classical beauty of Italian antique decor while pushing the boundaries of contemporary textile design.

NEW YORK DESIGN WEEK 2023

During the NY Design Week 2023 at the inaugural Oui! Design held in partnership with Villa Albertine, we were invited to showcase COMBRAY’s craftsmanship amongst fellow artisans. In collaboration with Ateliers Jouffre and Studio Anthost, we created a striking textile installation on the walls of Ateliers Jouffre LIC showroom.

Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean landscapes and the art of Fernand Léger and Jean Royère, we created a large panoramic abstract composition featuring bold geometric patterns in organza appliqué, adorned with beadwork and sequins, highlighting our meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design approach.

LA MAMA EXPERIMENTAL

As part of La Mama Experimental Theater’s Annual Puppet Festival in NYC, Combray’s team was invited in 2023 by director Aaron Haskel to create several scenography pieces for his latest work, The Pact.

For this play set at the heart of the animal world, where legendary tales of our ancestors intertwine with an apocalyptic future dominated by wolves, we designed several key elements: the wolves’ dens, a magic portal, the river that separates the two realms, and a scroll depicting an imaginary aerial view.

These pieces were crafted using up-cycled objects and painted fabrics, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and creativity.
